When To Hire A Professional Landscaper

Sometimes we find ourselves looking at our landscapes and wondering what we could personally do to enhance our properties. In many instances we can handle many smaller projects ourselves. However, there are times that we may find ourselves overwhelmed when designing or trying to complete a project.

Many Do it Yourselfers can find that projects that we thought were simple, are much more complex involving specialized skills and tools. We may find ourselves making multiple trips to the home improvement store for various parts in the middle of the project or buying costly specialized tools that we may never use again. This can lead to a source of frustration and can even make ourselves question our abilities. While some homeowners are undoubtedly capable of constructing a pergola for example, many of us just don’t have that area of expertise under our belts.

Sometimes age, health concerns, life challenges or other barriers can also prevent us from giving our landscape the attention it deserves. Handling heavy landscape materials, squatting, & kneeling can be outright impossible for some homeowners, while finding the time to commit to a project can seem impossible. It is important to remember not to get in over your head when tackling any project yourself and never place your safety at risk. It may ultimately cost more to fix mistakes than to have hired a professional in the beginning.

Whatever the reason may be, sometimes projects are genuinely better left to professionals. A professional landscaper can for example provide in-depth knowledge of plants which will thrive in our climate and can provide recommendations to keep a lawn manicured and lush green in color. A landscape pro may also be able to detect tree or plant diseases before they become fatal to the tree.  Additionally, a landscape professional will be able to properly determine the best approach to the project, eliminating material waste and excess labor costs.

When you decide to hire a professional to complete your landscape project, they should have the skills, knowledge, and tools needed to get the job done right the first time. It is important to choose the right company, which may not be the company with the lowest price. In many industries “fly by night” operators may offer a very attractive price, only to provide questionable work in the end, presuming they even finish the job. Unfortunately, many homeowners have found themselves in a situation such as this which can cost them thousands of dollars extra to have the work completed again correctly.

Consider choosing a company who is well established, provides details in writing, has positive customer reviews, and stands behind its work. Ensure they are licensed & insured, and are very upfront about costs, time frames, etc. Ensure that everything is put into writing to protect all parties involved. A little due diligence can go a long way in preventing frustrations or worse. The additional expense of hiring a landscape professional may seem costly but always consider the amount of time and expense in which the professional has invested to have the necessary skills needed to complete a project.
